Sheriff Dale R. Gribler reports that Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to
the scene of a motorcycle crash on the exit ramp of eastbound I-94 at County
Road 687 in Hartford Township at about 3:20pm yesterday. Information given was
that the motorcycle had caught on fire and there were two victims involved. When
Deputies arrived on scene a private citizen and a Motor Carrier Officer were
giving CPR to the driver of the motorcycle. Another bystander, who stopped at
the crash scene, attended to the passenger of the motorcycle who also was
visibly injured. Hartford Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the
engulfed motorcycle. Emergency Medical Technicians and Medical Personal arrived
on scene and provided medical attention to the injured boy. He was later
transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo for medical treatment. The driver
of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene. It appeared that Tufnell was
exiting eastbound I-94 and may have been traveling too fast to negotiate the
curve on the exit ramp. The skid marks on the pavement indicated that Tufnell
locked up the brakes on the motorcycle in an attempt to stop, but slid sideways
and off the ramp into the grass. Both were thrown from the motorcycle.
